My Piano Students Play the 12 Days of Christmas

As mentioned yesterday, my students collaborated to create a special video as the “grand finale” of our Countdown to the New Year project. Today, I’m sharing the video for you to see.

Please enjoy our take on The 12 Days of Christmas!

I hope you enjoy our fun little video. Credit goes to my student, Elijah, for the idea. Because it was a somewhat last-minute project, and we kept it simple — each student learned only the RH melody for their assigned day. But I think it turned out pretty great regardless!

I’m thinking about doing it again next year. I have some ideas for expanding it a bit.

If you are curious to hear more about the behind-the-scenes planning and video editing, could you let me know? If there’s enough interest, perhaps I’ll write up a blog post or even create a purchasable kit with everything you need!

Thanks for watching!

UPDATE: The 12 Days of Christmas Project: A Collaborative Video Kit has been published and is available for purchase here!

    1. Thanks so much for sharing your Countdown to the New Year/Twelve Days of Christmas project, Joy! So fun. I would be interested in hearing more about the planning and video editing! Happy New Year! 🙂

  1. What a wonderful idea and a great performance by all of your students, not to mention how it was put together, including the images of what each day represented!!! Amazing!! You are the best!!! Thank you!

  2. What a great idea and wonderful performances by your students. I loved the simplicity of hearing the delightful melody of this favorite carol. It is so long that many of my parents ask me to not assign it even if asked for by their child, but this format makes it a delight to hear and view.
Thank you, as always, for your ideas.
Wishing you, your family & students continued blessings in this new year. /Deb

  3. Forgot to add that I would be interested in any info on the planning, videoing & editing.
    Take care. /Deb

  4. What a perfect way to utilize the video format for an ensemble performance!!! I love this and all of its possibilities of enlarging with left-hand accompaniment. Great that it can be tailored to the level of the students involved. Thanks for sharing, and I’d love to know the technical aspects of this project, too!

  5. Interesting! I wonder how you kept the rhythm going as the students played the song. Very smooth transitions!! Well executed and a great idea!! Thanks so much for sharing!!

I’m still very happy that I was able to do duets. Thanks to you!!! Check them out!!

I’ve sent this to you before but I really need feedback so that it looks better when I send my link. There’s something missing.. it has editing tools that I would like to disappear.

    Thanks so much!

  6. Wonderfully done! I am impressed with matching tunings and tempos.
I would love to learn all the tricks of the video editing!

  7. Such fun! And wonderfully produced! Yes, please show us “oldies but goodies” how you do all this magical digital stuff. It’s so hard to “keep up” when things seem to change by the minute nowadays. Thanks for being such a great inspiration and fearless leader, Joy.

  8. That was super cute! Loved the addition of the graphics! What a great idea and perfect for right now. I would be very interested in how you put the video together , so a blog would be great! I see this being a possible for a winter or spring recital. Thanks for so many great ideas!

  9. Amazing! I love this! I have NO idea how you did that and would love to know.
And wonder if it would be possible to do a screen grid with all of them doing the last one? That would be cute to see, too, but, again I have no idea about any of this. I wish I were more savvy. YOU are amazing!!!

  10. Joy,
This is wonderful! Thank you SO much for all of your posts that help and encourage us. Yes, I would love additional information on editing guidelines for creating videos!

  11. Joy,
What a great idea! I’ll bet the kids had so much fun with this project! I’d love to have a kit to put that together for next Christmas.
I must say, though that I was amazed how well
in tune – with each other! – those pianos were!
    How did you do that?!
    Thanks so much for sharing!

  12. Oh wow!!!!!! I loved that! I bet the kids and parents alike loved it too. Great job editing this too, I’m sure that took a lot of time. I love the graphics too, what a nice touch. AND I loved how all the different pianos were decorated for Christmas. So so so neat! Thank you for sharing! I’m so sad I didn’t think of this for my own virtual recital. Well done!
