A couple of weeks ago when the small bookcase next to the piano in my studio starting leaning rather precariously, I knew it was time to find a new one! Finding a bookcase that has shelves that are tall enough to hold music books is a challenge, however. The other challenge is finding something sturdy enough to support the weight of all those music books!
But I think I found the perfect solution. 🙂
My sister and brother-in-law along with my two nephews have been visiting for the last week (hence the lack of blog posts lately — sorry!). We made a trip out to IKEA yesterday, and I bought this BESTÅ shelf unit for $130:
Update: The large BESTÅ shelf unit pictured above is no longer available, but you can get two of this BESTÅ shelf unit instead to get the same look! The shelves are purchased separately here.
I did the math and found that I could make three of the shelves tall enough to hold music books. The shelves can hold up to 66 pounds of weight. The center board helps make the bookcase extra sturdy too. I like that the bookcase has a medium height — not too tall, not too small.
I assembled the bookcase last night and reorganized my music library. Here is how it looks in my studio:
I love my new bookcase!
Have you gotten anything new for your studio lately to prepare for the next school year? 🙂
Update: Since this post, I have also added a couple of KALLAX shelf units from IKEA to my studio. These also work well for sheet music, and I like the look even more than the BESTA! The KALLAX shelf units come in a number of different configurations. For examples, explore these links: one, two, three, four.
It looks very nice…
I went to ikea yesterday too 🙂
And it was for the same reason to buy a new shelf….
I will share a pic of mine in ur facebook page 🙂
I just got a bulletin board/chalkboard that I’m pretty excited about! And some washi tape for decorating!
Sounds fun! 🙂
Hi, Joy ~ I purchased two tall, narrow bookshelves from IKEA and have one on either side of my piano. They work great for music and music-related knick-knacks that students have given to me over the years. Now to get it a little better organized by sections! I love your website ~ such great ideas!
Thanks, Jane!
I forgot to mention that I teach piano, violin and guitar, so keeping the music straight, with accompaniment, etc. is challenging. I’m thankful that I’ve had a couple donations of music given to me, so it’s fun to be able to pass it along to my students, as they advance to higher levels. 🙂 We’re off to a good start this week, and I love to see all the enthusiasm in the students!
Hi Joy! The shelves look great! Hooray for form, function, and organization! 🙂
I love your bookcase and want to buy one for my piano studio! I don’t think the link is working now. Do you happen to have the model number?
Hi Jana! It is a BESTÅ shelf unit. Unfortunately, they are being discontinued so I’m not sure if you will be able to get your hands on one anymore! 🙁
Ok, thank you. I will look again to see if they have anything similar. 🙂
