Ever find yourself wanting to make a music worksheet for your students, but don’t have easy access to any music notation software?  This tutorial will get you on your way to creating your own music worksheets using a word processor on your computer — without purchasing an expensive music notation software. Once you’ve created some worksheets, you can print as many worksheets as you need and send them home with your students.

Using Finale software, I have saved tons of image files of chords, five finger patterns, arpeggios, etc. on my computer over the last couple years.  I’d like to share them with you, so you can make your own music worksheets using just a simple word processor like Microsoft Word.

Here’s how it works:

  1. On your computer, open your word processor software (e.g., Microsoft Word).
  2. Download the file(s) you need by clicking on each link below, right clicking the picture, and selecting “Save to Desktop.”
  3. Go back to your word processor.  Click the “Insert” from the menu across the top, and select “Picture” or “File” — depending on your software. Select the image file you need from your desktop. The image file should appear in your worksheet. You may need to change the wrap setting so that you can freely move the picture anywhere on your worksheet.
  4. Repeat the above step as needed.  Finish your worksheet by numbering and creating blanks for each problem (e.g., “2. ________” ).  Be sure to save your document periodically as you are working on it.

And now here are the image files…

Major and Minor Five Finger Patterns in Treble Clef only:

Note: the “Tr” = “treble clef”

Let me know if you find any errors in the above links, so I can get them fixed!   Be sure to check back later, and I’ll try to post some more image files — like chords, intervals, and arpeggios.

I hope that you find these downloads to be helpful and time-saving.  Let me know know what kind of worksheets you managed to make using these tif files.  Good luck!

  1. Thank you for sharing how to make worksheets. It will be very helpful to me. Can you tell me where to find blank staffs, notes and keyboards to make my own worksheets? Thanks!!!!

I check your website every week–it’s great!!!

    1. Thanks for your comment. I wasn’t sure if anybody was using these photo files, but now that I know you have found them helpful, maybe sometime I’ll try to post more (like the items you mentioned). I’ll add it to my to-do list!

  2. Thanks so much for these! We’re learning 5 finger patterns in my class, and it makes it so much easier when I can see the minor ones rather than just learning by whole and half steps
