Here’s a project I’ve been creating and testin Here’s a project I’ve been creating and testing for over three years: Meet the Musician’s Practice Planner, an 88-week assignment book and practice log! This planner is designed to make it easy for musicians and teachers to structure goal-oriented lessons and practice sessions. It comes in the form of a trade-sized (6×9 inches), spiral-bound notebook — just the right size to live on the piano rack, open and within sight while practicing.

• 88 weekly planning pages — enough for ~2 years of lessons
• Set clear goals for each assignment
• Daily checkboxes to track practice progress towards each weekly goal
• Weekly star rating to encourage self-reflection
• Tally days practiced at the bottom of each page

This simple, consistent format helps students of all ages practice with intention—leading to better focus, faster progress, and stronger habits.

Early in my teaching career (20 years ago!), I used blank, journal sized-notebooks as my assignment books for my students. Later, for a handful of years, I went digital and was using an assignment app. More recently, I have to say it feels good to be back to paper…and to be using a customized assignment format that works exactly the way I think and teach — which feels wonderful! I’ve been using my Musician’s Practice Planner particularly with my older students and have been finding it very useful.

If you have students who might benefit from an assignment structure that is goal-oriented and encourages mindful practice, I hope you’ll give the Musician’s Practice Planner a try!

Sunday morning practice: Here’s a snippet from “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning,” arranged by Thomas Keesecker. It’s jazzy, plus uses bits of Bach Invention No. 13. Fun!!

I don’t typically go for arrangements that combine hymns with classical literature, but I actually really like this one!

I’m pretty sure I own nearly every book of hymn arrangements by Thomas Keesecker. This one comes from his 2024 book, Peace Like a River. I highly recommend his music to any church musician.

It’s hard to choose only a few photos, but here It’s hard to choose only a few photos, but here are some highlights from the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy #NCKP2025! As always, the Frances Clark Center delivered a fantastic event. So many memories: the Innovation Summit; dozens of fabulous sessions; rooming with my buddy @pianopantryamy; hosting my first Marketplace Table and meeting fans of my work; meals and laughs with old and new friends; teamwork with my peers on the Committee on Young Musicians; and much more. I’m feeling thankful and proud to be part of such a great profession and community! 🎹
