Tuned In — Conversation Starters for Musicians
100 Printable Conversation Cards

A good question is often all it takes. Tuned In gives you 100 of them — written specifically for musicians — to spark the kind of conversations that make every musician in the room feel known.

Tuned In is a printable conversation card game — 100 questions written by me, a pianist and piano teacher — for musicians of any age, instrument, or experience level. Some questions are lighthearted; others go deeper — into music, identity, and what it means to be a musician. No competition, no scores, no prep required.

  • Perfect for music teachers. Use it at studio recitals, group lessons, music camps, rehearsals, and private lessons — it’s a natural ice-breaker at the start of any session with a group of students. It also works beautifully for one-on-one lessons — choose a question of the week to use with all your students, or let each student draw a card at the start of their lesson.
  • Great for any musician gathering. Not just for the classroom — Tuned In is a natural fit for rehearsals, practice sessions, pre-performance time, social meet-ups, or any time musicians want to go a little deeper than small talk.
  • Great for music organizations. Ice breakers, chapter and board meetings, retreats, conferences — anywhere teachers and musicians gather, Tuned In helps everyone in the room feel connected, not just introduced.

What’s included in the PDF:

  • 100 printable conversation cards organized as three sets
  • Printable cardholders for storage with playing instructions
  • A page of blank cards — write your own questions and make the deck your own
  • Printing and assembly instructions

About the Sets:

  • Set 1 (20 cards) — For young musicians or first-time musicians. Sample question: “If you could teach your best friend something to play on your instrument, what would it be?”
  • Set 2 (20 cards) — For musicians ready for more thoughtful sharing. Sample question: “Tell us about the instrument you own — where it came from and what it means to you.”
  • Set 3 (60 cards) — For musicians ready for introspective sharing. Sample question: “What does music give you that nothing else does?”

Sets can be combined and shuffled together — or for mixed-age groups, keep them in separate stacks and let each player draw from whichever fits best.

Printing Options:

Designed to print beautifully in black and white — no color printer required. Print onto cardstock and cut apart — or, better yet, print on standard business card paper and just snap the cards apart along the perforations. No scissors, no trimmer — just load, print, and you’re done. Here are links to the ones I recommend (available for inkjet and laser printers).

Two License Options Available:

  • Individual license: Print as many copies as you need for your own use with your students or groups. This license covers the purchaser only.
  • Organization license: Each member of your organization may print and use the cards freely with their own students or groups. The PDF file may not be distributed outside your organization.

Print it once and use it for years. Your next great conversation is one card away.
