I came across an interesting site last night…

Wikifonia.org is a place where you can download free lead sheet pdfs. The best part is that it’s completely legal: in fact, the author rights of copyrighted music are compensated (read more here).

Lead sheets can be a fun way for students (especially for teen/adult students) to use and practice their knowledge of theory, chords, and voice leading in a practical, fun way!

Some quick examples of songs they have available:

The Beatles

What A Wonderful World

Stevie Wonder

Folk tunes (including Christmas songs)

Jazz standards

Soundtracks/music theatre

and much more!

Check it out!

> Scales & Primary Chords Worksheet 1 (CGDF)

Ideally, this worksheet is designed for the intermediate+ student who is already familiar with the scales and primary chords for the keys of C, G, D, and F major, and perhaps could use some review in writing them out on the staff. However, this worksheet could also be used during a group lesson while introducing these ideas for the first time.

Terms/concepts covered in the worksheet:

An understanding of key signatures for C, G, D, and F major.

Practice writing out scales.

Practice writing out primary chords.

Watch for the next worksheet coming soon, covering D, A, E, and Bb major!

you know dirty acronyms for the order of sharps.

you can name relatives of the “Grandmother Chord.”

you can not only identify any one of Bach’s 371 Harmonized Chorales by ear, but you also know what page it is on in the Riemenschneider edition and how many suspensions it has in the first four bars.

I hope this list gave you at least a few chuckles. This list originally a list of 75, but I whittled it down to 55 to omit some of the ones I totally didn’t get.

I can’t take credit for this list – it was given to me by my theory professor at college two years back. I hope you enjoyed it.
